OK, first off, I've done this lots of times without trouble (as have
thousands of others, hence the lack of replies). I'm afraid everything
I can offer here is suspicion and innuendo...

Smells like geometry trouble.

Stops smelling like geometry, starts smelling like dodgy hardware.
Inconsistent behaviour of this kind is unexpected from any software/
driver problem.

The 'hackers' list has been full of abuse about this chipset, but I
haven't heard a suggestion that it is sufficiently broken to cause
your problems.

Are you sure it's IDE and not some sort of EIDE? What's the disk geometry?
is there some sort of BIOS extender / disk manager involved?

Shouldn't have thought so, if it's pure IDE...

Not much help, I'm afraid, but the answers to my questions might spark
something.
