 Are you trying to boot your kernel from the boot blocks or from
 the third-stage boot loader?
 
 If you're trying to boot your kernel in single user from the
 loader, the correct way of doing this is to specify:
 +------------
 | Type '?' for a list of commands, 'help' for more detailed help.
 | disk1s1a:> boot -s
 +------------
 and not just ``-s''.
