i find it irritating when, more often than not, a prompt intermingles
w/ other text... unless there is a "newline" -- and/or other
highlighting characters -- before the prompt.

i have simpler prompts (than for local xterm) for situations where
time and/or line space is more important than the prompt itself, like on
console or on a remote host.
