Sure.  Why don't you say what the missing options were?  If it's 'z',
that's a new option to GNU tar to ask for decompression with gzip.
The following are equivalent:

   tar xzvf foo.tar.gz

   gunzip < foo.tar.gz | tar xvf -

If that's not it, let's have more details
