The pro's and con's of tar vs. dump/restore have been discussed here
recently.

You've got the choice between tar, cpio and pax on the one hand, and
dump/restore on the other.  If you are adventurous, you can also make
something like a backup with dd. :-)

I hardly doubt you could make anything roughly comparable with a
backup using ``mt''. ;-)
