Hi Rene,

Do you have

options	UFS_DIRHASH

in your kernel? According to LINT, it improves speed on operations on 
very large directories. Also, I recently saw a discussion on tuning 
FreeBSD & Samba, I think it was in -hackers. Maybe you can check the
archieves.
