I have run:
uname -a && sysctl dev.pcm dev.hdaa
for each of stable/11 and head, both unpatched and patched. (The
"unpatched" versions were a bit older -- almost a week, for stable/11;
=66rom back in August, for head -- but that does not appear to be
significant in the present case.)
