Its a lot better on later devices / firmware and does depend on the controller / MB they are connected to. We have ~ 1000 SSD's in production most being consumer grade Sandforce based and disks, from various manufactures, drops are still fairly rare now; I'd estimate ~ 1 or 2 per month. Samsung 840 Pro's seem pretty good too for consumer devices.
