I use 5.3 on an Aptiva K6/350 and I used to have the exact same problem.

try re-compiling your kernel with the following optimizations in /etc/make.conf:

CPUTYPE=k6
<and if not already there>
CFLAGS= -O -pipe
COPTFLAGS= -O -pipe
