I have found a method to hang recent 4.4-STABLE and this is 100% reproducable with my hardware. 1. Have options VESA in the kernel config. 2. Load the system with splash screen enabled or run VGL-enabled application like /usr/ports/games/digger-vgl then quit it. 3. Wait some time, 2-5 minutes. 3. Run XFree86-4.1.0 from ports. Just before switching to graphics mode console hangs. It is in the text mode but no keys are working - cannot switch vt's, cannot reboot with C-A-D, cannot switch to DDB with C-A-ESC. I have no LAN here and cannot say if this is dead kernel or just X or console. So I need to reset my system with Power button. Another way to reproduce this: do not use splash, start X then switch to console. Run digger-vgl, quit, wait 5 minutes then try to switch to X. System is frozen in the same way. For reason unknown it does not hang when I switch to X immediately after using console graphics, so I can boot with splash screen and xdm(1) enabled in /etc/ttys. But if I switch from X to console, work there some time and switch back, it always hangs. I've found a workaround: before switching to X do at vty0: vidconrol 80x30 Then it does not hang when switching to X. My system is recent 4.4-STABLE, video is S3 Trio3D 4M AGP, Iwill BD100Plus motherboard, Celeron 300A. Results are exactly the same when I run it at 300Mhz or overclock at 450Mhz. If I do not use console graphics, system runs rock stable. Here is my dmesg.boot: Copyright (c) 1992-2001 The FreeBSD Project.
