tag. Most of that looks like it's stuff to specify commands, examples, and the like. DocBook doesn't need these, since it has element like and so on. These, in conjunction with a stylesheet, determine what the output looks like. See, for example, the Handbook converted from DocBook to HTML, at As you can see, userinput is clearly defined, navigation links are present, and so on. See also my introduction to the Doc. Proj., at which has a lot of information about DocBook, the tags you want to use, and so on. The primer is incomplete, I should be uploading a more complete version tomorrow (Monday) evening. > Second: How could I let people adding text to it but respecting the > style of it. What are the tools available to share it and let them > submit new work and corrections? The simplest way is to let people download the source from you, and include instructions explaining how they can send you the diff. Alternatively, if and when this becomes a part of the core FreeBSD doc set, people can receive it in the same ways they can receive the other FreeBSD core docs. You don't need to worry about the 'style' of it, because the style is dictated by the stylesheet. As long as people submitting content to you use the same elements to mean the same thing, it will look the same. This is one of the reasons I've written the primer listed above. Incidentally, have you considered getting a lot of this content integrated into the FAQ? A lot of it looks like FAQ material. N -- C.R.F. Consulting -- we're run to make me richer. . . I like the new handbook and I will read your introduction to the doc project. It was supposed to be something like a tutorial, but I made it look like a Q&A. I don't know how to integrate it in the FreeBSD FAQ. Has a new section or pick some part of it? Or the handbook? Anyway, to me, it look more like a tutorial but it could change. The file .Ar "output-file" will be created if it does not already exist. If Ar "output-file" does exist, its messages will be included in the new .Ar "output-file" . If set and message numbers collide, the new message text defined in .Ar "input-file ..." will replace the old message text currently contained in .Ar "output-file" . .Sh INPUT FILES The format of a message text source file is defined below. Note that the fields of a message text source line are seperated by a single space character: any other space characters are considered to be part of the field contents. .Pp .Bl -tag -width .It Cm $set Ar n comment This line specifies the set identifier of the following messages until the next .Nm $set or end-of-file appears. The .Ar n is the set identifier which is defined as a number in the range [1, (NL_SETMAX)]. Set identifiers must occur in ascending order within a single source file, but need not be contiguous. Any string following a space following the set identifier is treated as a comment. If no .Nm $set directive is specified in a given source file, all messages will be located in the default message set NL_SETD. .It Cm $del Ar n comment This line deletes messages from set .Ar n from a message catalog. The .Ar n specifies a set number. Any string floowing a space following the set number is treated as a comment. .It Cm $ Ar comment A line beginning with .Nm $ followed by a space is treated as a comment. .It Ar m message-text A message line consists of a message identifier .Ar m in the range [1, (NL_MSGMAX)]. The .Ar message-text is stored in the message catalog with the set identifier specified by the last .Nm $set directive, and the message identifier .Ar m . If the .Ar message-text is empty, and there is a space character following the message identifier, an empty string is stored in the message catalog. If the .Ar message-text is empty, and there is not a space character following the message identifier, then the existing message in the current set with the specified message identifier is deleted from the catalog. Message identifiers must be in ascending order within a single set, but need not be contiguous. The .Ar message-text length must be in the range [0, (NL_TEXTMAX)]. .It Cm $quote Ar c This line specifies an optional quote character .Ar c which can be used to surround .Ar message-text so that trailing space or empty messages are visible in message source files. By default, or if an empty .Nm $quote directive is specified, no quoting of .Ar message-text will be recognized. .El Empty lines in message source files are ignores. The effect of lines beginning with any character other than those described above are undefined. .Pp Text strings can contain the following special characters and escape sequences. In addition, if a quote character is defined, it may be escaped as well to embed a literal quote character. .Pp .Bl -tag -width Ds -offset indent .It Cm \en linefeed .It Cm \et horizontal tab .It Cm \ev vertical tab .It Cm \eb backspace .It Cm \er carriage return .It Cm \ef form feed .It Cm \e\e backslash .It Cm \eddd octal number in the range [000, 377] .El .Pp A backslash character immediately before the end of the line in a file is used to continue the line onto the next line, e.g.: .Pp .Dl 1 This line is continued \e .Dl on this line. .Pp If the character following the backslash is not one of those specified, the backslash is ignored. .Sh DIAGNOSTICS The .Nm gencat utility exits 0 on success, and >0 if an error occurs. .Sh SEE ALSO .Xr catclose 3 , .Xr catgets 3 , .Xr catopen 3 .Sh STANDARDS The .Nm gencat utility is compliant with the .St -xpg4 standard. .Sh AUTHOR This manual page by .An Ken Stailey updated and revised by .An Terry Lambert . .Sh BUGS A message catalog file created from a blank input file can not be revised; it must be deleted and recreated. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Mon Nov 16 19:31:52 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id TAA04433 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Mon, 16 Nov 1998 19:31:52 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from smtp2.mailsrvcs.net (smtp2.gte.net [207.115.153.31]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id TAA04423 for ; Mon, 16 Nov 1998 19:31:47 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from kfoster1@gte.net) Received: from clark (1Cust148.tnt4.redmond.wa.da.uu.net [153.37.202.148]) by smtp2.mailsrvcs.net with SMTP id VAA10785 for ; Mon, 16 Nov 1998 21:31:15 -0600 (CST) Message-ID: <001901be11db$7c31c8a0$94ca2599@clark> From: "Kent Foster" To: Subject: Handbook? Trouble is, he wants something he can just print out from windows, with no fooling around. The "plain text" version looks like it would be in unix text format, maybe requiring 'col -b' under unix (which is hard if you haven't installed it yet). Someone correct me if I'm wrong. The alternative would be to use the nice PDF version of the Handbook, though the PDF reader is a pretty hefty download from adobe.com. The postscript version of any *.gz probably won't be very usable under microsoft. Now I seem to remember we discussed this before, and that there was a microsoft-friendly text version somewhere. Why can't I see it?? Maybe another docs person will give the exact URL. -- Regards, -*Sue*- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Mon Nov 16 22:18:04 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id WAA22706 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Mon, 16 Nov 1998 22:18:04 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from emu.sourcee.com (emu.sourcee.com [199.201.159.173]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id WAA22698 for ; Mon, 16 Nov 1998 22:18:01 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from nrice@emu.sourcee.com) Received: (from nrice@localhost) by emu.sourcee.com (8.9.1/8.9.1) id BAA06175; Tue, 17 Nov 1998 01:17:17 -0500 (EST) Message-ID: <19981117011717.A6142@emu.sourcee.com> Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998 01:17:17 -0500 From: "Norman C. Normally all questions go to freebsd-questions, but I'm glad you raised it here because you've helped us to improve our documentation. It looks like we need a FAQ entry for microsoft users, at least one other output format for the FAQ and Handbook, and a link to it at the beginning of the Handbook. Preperation 2. Build the Web Pages from scratch 3. Install the web pages into your web server 4. Update the Web pages. 5. Automatically build and update 1. Preperation Install the meta-port port `docproj-1.0`. The "meta-port" for the FreeBSD Documentation Project contain alls ports which you need to build the web pages and DocBook documents. NOTE: make sure your documentation ports are up to date! When in doubt, delete the old ports by hand before installing the port docproj-1.0! For example, we currently depend on jade-1.2 and if you have installed jade-1.1, please do $ pkg_delete jade-1.1 before installing the port docproj-1.0. Setup a CVS repository. You need the directories www and doc in the CVS tree (plus the CVSROOT of course). See the CVSup introduction http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/cvsup.html how to get the subdirs www (collection www) and doc (collection doc-all). Set the environment variable CVSROOT to your CVS repository, e.g. if your CVS repository lives in /home/ncvs [for bourne shell users] $ CVSROOT=/home/ncvs; export CVSROOT [for csh shell users] % setenv CVSROOT /home/ncvs 2. Build the Web Pages from scratch a) Go to into a temp directory with at least 50 MB free space $ cd /usr/tmp/webuild b) Checkout the SGML files from the CVS tree $ cvs -R co web doc c) Goto in the directory web and build all symbolic links $ cd web $ make links d) Goto in the sub directory 'en' and build all pages [in this example you are in the directory /usr/tmp/webuild/web] $ cd en $ make 3. Install the web pages into your web server a) Call make install in the 'en' subdirectory [in this example you are in the directory /usr/tmp/webuild/web/en] $ make install DESTDIR=/usr/local/www This comand install the web page into the directory /usr/local/www/data Congratulation: You are done!!! 4. Update the Web pages. a) Go to into your temp directory $ cd /usr/tmp/webuild b) Update the pages from the CVS Repository. The cvs tool will update the pages, add new and delete old pages and directories. $ cvs -R update -dP c) Goto in the directory 'web/en' and build all pages [in this example you are in the directory /usr/tmp/webuild] $ cd web/en $ make d) Install the web pages. See section 3) Note: the install process does not delete outdated pages from your web server. You must do this by hand! You can check for old pages with the command: [in this example /usr/local/www/data is the data directory of your web server] $ find /usr/local/www/data ctime -1 5. Automatically build and update The FreeBSD webmaster wrote a shell script which do the build and update automatically by a cron job. The script also update the full text search engine at www.freebsd.org. -- Wolfram Schneider http://freebsd.org/~w/ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Tue Nov 17 08:52:12 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id IAA05582 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Tue, 17 Nov 1998 08:52:12 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from uia.net (uia.net [157.22.213.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id IAA05447 for ; Tue, 17 Nov 1998 08:51:59 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from carla@honeyvillegrain.com) Received: from rcnt1.rcnt1 (207.67.188.10) by uia.net with ESMTP (Eudora Internet Mail Server 2.2); Tue, 17 Nov 1998 08:54:04 -0700 Received: from CARLA by rcnt1.rcnt1 with SMTP (Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service Version 5.0.1457.7) id WHKB8G86; Tue, 17 Nov 1998 08:49:40 -0800 From: "Carl Anderson" To: Subject: ISP Hardware Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998 09:53:52 -0700 Message-ID: <000001be124a$db97ef80$3709a8c0@carla> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_0001_01BE1210.2F391780" X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook 8.5, Build 4.71.2173.0 Importance: Normal X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V4.72.3155.0 Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0001_01BE1210.2F391780 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Did you have a tutorial a while back that discussed the necessary hardware (with various configurations) for building an ISP? I often hit enter twice instead of once, and when the new page arrives I automatically follow the first link on the new page. I end up never seeing the new page and wonder how I got to the unexpected page that appears. In the case of this document, I would skip a section without knowing it existed. For that reason, I think it's safer for the first link to point to the previous page. If you want to find the "next" link easily with lynx, put it as the last link on the page. A single keystroke (take your pick) will get you to that link. -- Regards, -*Sue*- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Tue Nov 17 12:18:58 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id MAA05982 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Tue, 17 Nov 1998 12:18:58 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from angus.ASGtechnologies.com (angus.ASGtechnologies.com [198.164.16.10]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id MAA05977 for ; Tue, 17 Nov 1998 12:18:56 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from jon.downey@ASGtechnologies.com) Received: from tparis (tparis.ASGtechnologies.com [198.164.16.157]) by angus.ASGtechnologies.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id QAA28941; Tue, 17 Nov 1998 16:18:20 -0400 Message-Id: <3.0.6.32.19981117161639.007a1dc0@mailhub.asgtechnologies.com> X-Sender: jdowney@mailhub.asgtechnologies.com X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.6 (32) Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998 16:16:39 -0400 To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG From: Jon Downey Subject: Inclsuion in your pages Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Apologies if this is not the right address to mail this request to ... The call returns immediately after the read request has either been enqueued to the descriptor; the read may or may not not have completed at the time the call returns. .Pp If _POSIX_PRIORITIZED_IO is defined, and the descriptor supports it, then the enqueued operation is submitted at a priority equal to that of the calling process minus .Ar iocb->aio_reqprio . .Pp The .Ar iocb->aio_lio_opcode is ignored by the .Fn aio_read call. .Pp The .Ar iocb pointer may be subsequently used as an argument to .Fn aio_return and .Fn aio_error in order to determine return or error status for the enqueued operation while it is in progress. .Pp If the request could not be enqueued (generally due to invalid arguments), then the call returns without having enqueued the request. .Pp If the request is successfully enqueued, the value of .Ar iocb->aio_offset can be modified during the request as context, so this value must not be referenced after the request is enqueued. .Sh RESTRICTIONS The Asynchronous I/O Control Block structure pointed to by .Ar iocb and the buffer that the .Ar iocb->aio_buf member of that structure references must remain valid until the operation has completed. For this reason, use of auto (stack) variables for these objects is discouraged. .Pp Modifications of the Asynchronous I/O Control Block structure or the buffer contents after the request has been enqueued, but before the request has completed, are not allowed. .Pp If the file offset in .Ar iocb->aio_offset is past the offset maximum for .Ar iocb->aio_fildes , no I/O will occur. .Sh RETURN VALUES .Rv -std aio_read .Sh STANDARDS The .Fn aio_read call conforms to the .St -p1003.2 standard. .Sh DIAGNOSTICS None. .Sh ERRORS The .Fn aio_read function will fail if: .Bl -tag -width Er .It Bq Er EAGAIN The request was not queued because of system resource limitations. .It Bq Er ENOSYS The .Fn aio_read call is not supported. .El .Pp The following conditions may be synchronously detected when the .Fn aio_read call is made, or asynchronously, at any time thereafter. If they are detected at call time, .Fn aio_read returns -1 and sets .Ar errno appropriately; otherwise the .Fn aio_return function must be called, and will return -1, and Fn aio_error must be called to determine the actual calue that would have been returned in .Ar errno . .Pp .Bl -tag -width Er .It Bq Er EBADF .Ar iocb->aio_fildes is invalid. .It Bq Er EINVAL The offset .Ar iocb->aio_offset is not valid, the priority specified by .Ar iocb->aio_reqprio is not a valid priority, or the number of bytes specified by .Ar iocb->aio_nbytes is not valid. .It Bq Er EOVERFLOW The file is a regular file, .Ar iocb->aio_nbytes is greater than zero, the starting offset in .Ar iocb->aio_offset is before the end of the file, but is at or beyond the .Ar iocb->aio_fildes offset maximum. .El .Pp If the request is successfully enqueued, but subsequently cancelled or an error occurs, the value returned by the .Fn aio_return function is per the .Xr read 2 call, and the value returned by the .Fn aio_error function is either one of the error returns from the .Xr read 2 call, or one of: .Bl -tag -width Er .It Bq Er EBADF .Ar iocb->aio_fildes is invalid for reading. .It Bq Er ECANCELED The request was explicitly cancelled via a call to .Fn aio_cancel . .It Bq Er EINVAL The offset .Ar iocb->aio_offset would be invalid. .El .Sh HISTORY The .Nm Function first appeared in .Fx 3.0 . .Sh AUTHOR This manual page was written by .An Terry Lambert Aq terry@whistle.com . .Sh BUGS The value of iocb->aio_offset is ignored. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Tue Nov 17 16:11:37 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id QAA18447 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Tue, 17 Nov 1998 16:11:37 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from smtp04.primenet.com (smtp04.primenet.com [206.165.6.134]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id QAA18440 for ; Tue, 17 Nov 1998 16:11:34 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from tlambert@usr02.primenet.com) Received: (from daemon@localhost) by smtp04.primenet.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) id RAA06253 for ; Tue, 17 Nov 1998 17:11:08 -0700 (MST) Received: from usr02.primenet.com(206.165.6.202) via SMTP by smtp04.primenet.com, id smtpd006210; Tue Nov 17 17:11:04 1998 Received: (from tlambert@localhost) by usr02.primenet.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) id RAA17394 for doc@freebsd.org; Tue, 17 Nov 1998 17:11:03 -0700 (MST) From: Terry Lambert Message-Id: <199811180011.RAA17394@usr02.primenet.com> Subject: Feedback To: doc@FreeBSD.ORG Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 00:11:03 +0000 (GMT) X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL25] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I have submitted two man pages: o an updated gencat(1) man page o an aio_read(2) man page Feedback about whether they are acceptable, etc., is welcome; also where to send them if the list is not appropriate, since send-pr won't work on my machine because freebsd.org is too anal about delegated subdomains needing DNS entries. Why is the Linux How-To/Documentation project so big? I am also not suggesting that we should spoonfeed every god-given command. Also, I can see that file being a valuable resource for the whole FreeBSD community as means of a reference point (ever thought about people cvsupping from 2.2.x to 3.0? They haven't been monitoring current) and as a file in which global changes are very easy to track. And yes _I_ read cvs-all, but do others? We simply IMO cannot expect everyone who is wanting to try CURRENT to monitor current or cvs-*. --- Jeroen Ruigrok van der Werven/Asmodai asmodai(at)wxs.nl | Cum angelis et pueris, Junior Network/Security Specialist | fideles inveniamur *BSD & picoBSD: The Power to Serve... Maintain the file on your own home page. If you don't have one, mail me and I'll provide you with some space. Follow -current and -cvs-all-digest and use them to produce the HEADSUP file. Once you feel that it's something you're proud of, raise the issue on the -current mailing list again. I'm sure you'll receive a very different response then. Good luck, Sheldon. That might be your opinion, but the FreeBSD project has consistently stated the minimum requirements for running -current. I wrote up the enclosed text in response to a freebsd-questions request for how to install shadow passwords. I think it belongs in the handbook as opposed to the FAQ, but it does answer some questions that *are* asked frequently. >How-To-Repeat: >Fix: Passwords 1. How do passwords work? FreeBSD uses a "shadow password" system. There is an /etc/passwd file, as UNIX systems have always had, but it doesn't contain the actual passwords. Those are kept in /etc/master.passwd (and in a hashed database /etc/spwd.db). 2. So how do I change my password? With the 'passwd' command. 3. Editing password files Password files have more in them than just passwords. As an ordinary user, the 'chpass' command should be all you need as far as changing your entry, but for system administration purposes you need a lot more. Do *not* just edit the password files themselves. The easiest way to make your modifications is to use the 'vipw' command, which will bring up the password file in an editor, and automatically build the databases for you when you're done editing. If you *do* edit the master.passwd file directly, make sure to run the pwd_mkdb program on it afterwards. 4.
