I'd suggest adding chapters on the general interface of
the modular kernel subsystems before the chapters on particular 
implementations. For example, instead:

-File systems
--FFS
--MFS
...

do

-File systems
--File system interface (or Writing a filesystem)
--FFS
--MFS
...
