Same here on 2 different chipsets. However,=20
rebuilding smartmontools seems to fix it!

[gp-kit1]# smartctl -a /dev/ad0
smartctl version 5.33 [i386-portbld-freebsd6.0]=20

Failed command: : Inappropriate ioctl for device
Failed command: : Inappropriate ioctl for device
Smartctl: Device Read Identity Failed (not an ATA/ATAPI device)

A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To=20
continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options.
[gp-kit1]#

atapci0: <Intel ICH6 UDMA100 controller> port=20
0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6,0x170-0x177,0x376,0xf000-0xf00f at device 31.1 on pci0
ata0: <ATA channel 0> on atapci0
ata1: <ATA channel 1> on atapci0

And then rebuilding it, I get

[gp-kit1]# smartctl -a /dev/ad0
