 Performing this patch on FreeBSD 5.4-RELEASE-p5(or -p6)

 appears to resolve the problem. The patch has been MFC'd to RELENG_6, can
 it be issued for RELENG_5_4 as well? We'll be using it as a local patch
 for now.
