While this is true, consider that rev 1.1 of chown.8 says: COMPATIBILITY Previous versions of the chown utility used the dot (``.'') character to distinguish the group name. This has been changed to be a colon (``:'') character so that user and group names may contain the dot character. revision 1.1 date: 1994/05/26 05:22:22; author: rgrimes; state: Exp; It's also true that this was widely known and the transition was mostly orderly. We didn't turn it off one night as a side effect of another change that broke even our own world builds.
