One way could be to make a cronjob that > monitors the log but there should be better way, or? It seems /var resides on the root partition. Don't do this. Have another partition collet all those log messages. Also, redirect the daily maintenance report mail sent to root to your email account. This way, you may detect partitions filling up before it's too late. Usually, /var/log/messages gets rotated once a day, which prevents partitions filling up quite successfully.
