I'm a rxvt freak. ;> Your Matrox, with 8MB, should be easily able to handle my configuration. Just try life on X11 with DefaultColorDepth set to 24 or 32. A lot of people don't have their monitor and/or video card manuals (like I do ;), so they usually run into problems trying to tune X11 as much as possible.
