Being in the wheel group allows you to "su" (Switch User) to root. Try this at the command prompt: su It will respond with: Password: enter root's password and do what ever you need as root. The system will log the fact that you are logged in as alexd and that you su'd to root and performed some commands. When finished with root access, simply "exit", and you'll be alexd only again.
