Hi,

	Yes, that was the problem. I mounted a couple of Linux partitions
during bootup, from /etc/fstab. More as an experiment than anything else
really. After umounting them, shutdown and sync'ing proceed cleanly. Thanks
for the scripts, but I doubt I'll use them. I suppose it'll be easier for me
to mount and umount the ext2 partitions as and when required like removable
media. 

	Thanks to everyone who spent time answering my queries, I really
appreciate your help.
