Are you sure it's an 876?  There's no reference to a chip with that ID on
LSI Logic's site.  

My suggestion would be to boot a FreeBSD boot floppy on one of these
systems and see if the ncr driver picks it up.   That or have VAR read the
exact SYM###### off the chip.  Hint:  It doesn't start with 53C.
