You have the right idea looking through /etc/defaults/pccard.conf for supported cards. For example, the 3Com 574 card is their non-CardBus 10/100 card, and it works well with the ep driver. I think the Xircom cards are the only ones where both the modem and network parts are supported, but you should check the mailing list archives for more details ( http://www.freebsd.org/search/ ).
