Then restart your application after each try. Does it fix the issue? There has been a fix to ALSA libraries in FreeBSD and also VLC, to resolve = an issue with audio buffering after a kernel change. Maybe that is what hit yo= u. Are you using the latest port-version of the audio utilities? Else I can recommend to use virtual_oss for the audio device instead.
