I think this would be a good idea. However, there is only one way I think it might acutally work in practice: (1) The core team, in private, decide on a new name. This can be done through any means - I believe personal combat is the most viable one, but e-mail might be easier to arrange. (2) Core contacts the other interested parties (developers, external contributors, mailing lists, kids with FreeBSD sweatshirts, whatever), and gets an opinion on whether to actually change the name. This might be done with or without saying what the name would be changed to (personally, I think not saying would probably work better), but it is important that it is done AFTER the potential new name has been agreed on, as choosing a name after it has been decided to switch would be impossible.
