Mike Smith is still working on the more robust solution as we speak and it's certainly my expectation that we'll have this hammered out well before 2.2.6 ships. The "yardstick" we're using for this is getting a freshly installed 2.2.5 to upgrade to 2.2.6 without any such problems.
