Try this (taken from the handbook):

// load all the sound drivers
# kldload snd_driver

// see which one worked
# cat /dev/sndstat

Here's what got loaded:

Installed devices:
pcm0: <Intel ICH6 (82801FB)> at io 0xc8000800, 0xc8000400 irq 22 bufsz 16384 
kld snd_ich (1p/1r/0v channels duplex default)

So, I added the following to loader.conf:
# cat /boot/loader.conf
...
#sound driver
snd_ich_load="YES"
