My off-and-on reading of the threads confirms your suspicion: no distfiles are on the CDs. I think the deal is that there's not enough space on the CDs to add all the distfiles. And, I think, many prefer packages, so ou get packages instead. But if you've already got 3.4, what's the big deal?
