This is how I would like FreeBSD to behave, but this is not what I try to do here. Something like this is not around the corner, a barebones config file can be done in minutes (if the requirements are known). And a config file is also much more easy to MFC (and as such addresses the immediate needs of those which will not change the major version for some years from now) than a device ID DB and the corresponding changes in the kernel.
