Reverse DNS lookups are not done for one reason ... too many people have broken DNS information. In the time it takes the server to realise this, the person could have aborted and gone elsewhere. It also makes for a more interactive response, even for people with valid DNS data. It's not that difficult to convert IP->hostnames automatically at logfile rotation time...
