As it seems, the immutable flag is not set. See "man chflags",
set the "schg" flag for that particular file. This will make
all other attributes immune to any attempt to change them
(owner, group, permissions). Check with "ls -lo" that the
flag has been set.

Then stay with Xfce. However, the strange behaviour you're
experiencing is far from understandable... :-)
