Good morning,

I have got the 4.0 FreeBSD Walnut Creek CD-ROM and I haven't succeeded in
installing it. The installation from the CD-ROM works just fine, but when
I try to reboot the system, I get the message ``Missing Operating
System''. (Actually, I have copied this from Greg Lehey's website.
Unfortunately, he only provides the question, not the answer.)

My hardware is a Dell Precsion 410 with a 350MHz Pentium with 64 MB
memory. I have two SCSI controllers: 1) Adaptec AIC-7890 (which is 2940
U2W equivalent) with a Quantum Viking II 4.5 MB. 2) Adaptec AIC-7880 (2940
UW equivalent) for CD-ROM and ZIP drive. I also have a Maxtor 20 GB IDE
harddrive installed as primary master.

I have tried to install FreeBSD on the SCSI disk, as well as on the IDE
disk. If I use a boot manager and reboot after installation from CD-ROM, I
get "Missing Operating System", both on the SCSI and the IDE. If I try to
install it as the only OS on the disk (I tried this with the SCSI disk), I
get a "boot: " prompt and the system says "Default 0:da(0,a)/kernel". At
this stage I cannot enter any loader commands. If I enter "-v" I get
somehting like "Missing Kernel". The suggestions from Lehey's book: "boot
1:da(0,a)kernel" doesn't work.

I have looked at the FAQ and the archive, and tried two suggestions from
there: I have enabled the SCAM support in the SCSI BIOS and I have checked
that the installation finds the disks, especially the SCSI as ahc0.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Christian Schneider
