I can' t get FreeBSD to see my sound card

Is the Aureal Vortex I (8820)chip supported. Per the handbook it is, the
Vortex II is even used in the example, but it is not listed in the man page,
and I don't see any names that look like they would be for it when building
the kernel(of course another driver may be compatible). The card brand is
Turtle Beach Monteg I, came with a Dell Optiplex.

Following the handbook, I add "device pcm," then build and install the
kernel - without incident.

Upon reboot I try the "cat /dev/sndstat" and get:
    cat: /dev/sndstat: Device not configured

During the boot, the only unaccounted for card is:
    pci0: <unknown card> (vendor=0x12eb, dev=0x0001) at 13.0 irq 10
Which should be the sound card.

Please help - what am I missing?

The card works from DOS/Windows.

Thanks,
Jerry
