Don't make it shorter than necessary.

I don't really understand this.  It's a whole lot better to give the
exact output.  For example:

# cd /dev
# ./MAKEDEV wcd0
(All sorts of fireworks here)

In any case, MAKEDEV is only a script that creates device nodes.  It
will work the same whether you actually have the device connected or
not.

I don't think ATAPI uses DMA.  Does anybody else out there know?

No.  As I said, MAKEDEV has nothing to do with the real hardware.
