That's the main reason I converted some of my Solaris machines as well. 
It's amazing how well some FreeBSD apps port over to OS X directly from 
the source tree (ok, it takes a little tweaking).

As far as laptops, I went and bought a 12" PowerBook to get me a better 
portable UNIX environment. ;-)
