I recommend cleaning out /etc for major upgrades on systems that don't have the -U option on mergemaster. It can save a huge amount of time that is totally wasted! I delete rc.d/* isdn/* bluetooth/* defaults/* gnats/* mtree/* periodic/* and security/* as well as most other stuff in /etc that I know I have not modified and won't need for a single-user boot.
