You have to do something else -- in this case, killing sendmail before editing rc.conf and starting your preferred MTA after would be the minimum to achieve the intended effect. To test fully though, you should reboot. If the loss of connectivity is a consequence of rebooting, then it suggests that you're probably inadvertently modifying some other settings in rc.conf, or that the problem already existed and the changes to rc.conf are a red herring. There have been some changes to the syntax used to configure IPv6 addresses in 9.0 -- check rc.conf(5) for details -- but that doesn't seem entirely relevant here. Hmmm... how about showing us your rc.conf to see if we can spot any problems?
