Answering to my own message:

/stand/sysinstall in it's present shape was a great help. Copied it
from a newly installed machine (0801-SNAP) and ran it remotely
through an xterm-color. Nice and colorful though the
yellow characters on white background are a bit hard to decipher.
Used the W option in partition menu and was there.
