For your information we have mesured 730Kpps using pollng and  
fastforwarding
with 64bits frame without loss (<0.001% packet loss) on a Spirent  
Smarbits (Pentium D 2.8GHZ + 8xGig em)

The best performance / CPU cost ratio is to use 1 core only and the  
others core are free to do application processing.
