*.notice;kern.debug;lpr.info;mail.crit;news.err;daemon.warning /var/log/messages
                                                ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Elevating the level at which daemon messages are logged to messges
might help, no? Or even 'daemon.none' to kill them all?
