Hmm, I probably should have checked that reference more thoroughly before using it here. It's not as helpful for these purposes as I thought. Instead, I recommend googling for "lightweight linux apps". It's a frequently-discussed topic, and the people involved seem to love making lists. Most of the apps mentioned are in the FreeBSD portstree, so don't be put off by the fact that the discussion is usually confined to Linux.
