Spoken like a true hacker. :-)

This has been a known (albeit poorly understood) problem for a very long
time.  I understand that you fear this problem becoming a feature
through documentation, but the alternative is that the problem continues
to bite new-comers in the ass indefinitely.

I say the documentation should reflect reality.  Perhaps it'll annoy
someone like you enough to investigate and fix the problem. :-)
