It should work.  It should be recognized as an EB164. From the GENERIC
config file:

options         "DEC_EB164"             # EB164, PC164, PC164LX, PC164SX

I *think* your S3 should work right now.  I've been running X on an
S3-ViRGE in an AS200 for a few months now, at least.  You'll need the
patches at http://www.freebsd.org/~dfr/ when you build the X server.
If you read the mailing list archives, I believe at least one person
has server binaries available.
