You can configure the emulated nic per VM, and there are three varieties
of e1000 to choose from (in addition to two pcnet), only one of them now
doesn't work.  I'm not sure there's a configurable global default, the
default seems to depend on the type of guest OS selected when creating
the VM, and in fact now (with the patch) is a working e1000 variety when
creating a FreeBSD VM.
