Even if the date is set correctly, one still can experience the behaviour like this if some source files have modification dates pointing to a future time. A simple tool to eliminate these inconsistencies is ``find . -mtime -0'' followed by ``xargs touch''. Please understand this isn't a flame in any sense; the problems are probably a reflection of my own ignorance, but after a lot of work and lots of help from users I'm still unable to communicate with my modem, either on my laptop or my desktop. Neither tip nor ppp works for me. I have no problems with either on Linux so it can hardly be a hardware or BIOS problem. I like a lot of things about FreeBSD. notably its political philosophy (quite similar to that of Debian). However, Debian works admirably for me so FreeBSD has been just an experiment. I'm glad to have tried it and it's been an interesting learning experience, but I'm doubtful about persevering. (Perhaps this is just because I've had two bad colds in the past 10 days and am feeling rather low!) I predicted this long ago. What did you expect? Red Hat and other Linux distributors are not in business out of an altruistic desire to bring computing to the masses free of charge. They'll make as much money as they can, in any way they can, just like any other company (including much-hated Microsoft). > ... i see now why no one want to make a commercial > distribution of FreeBSD, because, US, the comunity > aroung FreeBSD love FreeBSD so much that we keep > it at the right price FREE!!! Another good reason is that FreeBSD works as-is, "out of the box." You don't have to add a "distribution" with half the code in it just to get a complete operating system environment. You can still download *everything* (as iso images if you wish) that comes with RH Pro from their website. You can also buy the base CD's (all you really need anyway) for a couple of bucks from cheapbytes and linuxmall. But no, of course they're not doing it completely altruistically. They're a company. They're there to make money. The method they choose is through support and services, and that seems to be working for them thus far. On the flip side they help Linux a lot by providing full time programmers to work on open source software, and the whole community benefits there. But you can (legally =p) have a fully working RH system without paying them a dime. > > ... i see now why no one want to make a commercial > > distribution of FreeBSD, because, US, the comunity > > aroung FreeBSD love FreeBSD so much that we keep > > it at the right price FREE!!! > > Another good reason is that FreeBSD works as-is, "out of the box." You don't "add a distribution", you choose one that packages everything you need. And they too work out of the box (that's the whole point after all). If you don't like the idea of commercial distributions, there's Debian for example. You shouldn't expect technical help on -newbies; that's not what the list is for, and most of the people who could help you aren't subscribed to it. Sorry to state the obvious but have tried minicom? btw, "Linux : Installation, Configuration, Use" by M. Kofler has good modem setup info that helped me in Freebsd. I apologize if you already have tried this, I have not kept up w/your thread. You use minicom to see if you can "talk" to your modem. If after trying minicon and possibly playing w/the bios, the irq, looking at #demseg, the modem's hardware jumpers, and trying whatever they say in freebsd-questions, or comp.unix.bsd.freebsd.misc, if after that you still can't do "ATZ" in minicom and get the modem to answer "OK", then hang it up (oh wow, a pun). BUT, then after ATZ OK works, use minicom to manually dial the isp and you can see exactly what the log in process is, and that can help w/the ppp part of it. If you report the login you see in minicom to freebsd-questions (better to post it there [though you could try going under the radar and post it in newbies - but more tech ques. aren't supposed to be posted here]) you will definately get ppp up. As i understand it is NOT working source tree, cause there is CVS/ folder only in src/ itself, and no anywhere else (not in src/bin , src/contrib .... and so on). All tree tagged as RELENG_4_3 ( there is file src/CVS/Tag). As i understand this is enough to build a REAL source tree (that has CVS/ in every source folder) RELENG_4_3 and not download every file in tree from server. How can i do this with cvs(1) ? P.S. cvs up -r RELENG_4_3 -d - failed it starts to download all files Thnx. iLLL To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Wed Jan 23 0: 2: 2 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from windstorm.stormnet.com (windstorm.stormnet.com [205.159.174.17]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 853D537B405 for ; Wed, 23 Jan 2002 00:02:00 -0800 (PST) Received: from localhost.localdomain (ppp011-56k-Chico-liquidsky.stormnet.com [207.231.3.11]) by windstorm.stormnet.com (8.10.1-StormNet/8.10.1) with SMTP id g0N81mf06735 for ; Wed, 23 Jan 2002 09:01:54 +0100 Date: Wed, 23 Jan 2002 00:01:49 -0800 From: Raquel Rice To: freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Message-Id: <20020123000149.0e7b9672.raquel@thericehouse.net> Organization: TheRiceHouse X-Mailer: Sylpheed version 0.5.1 (GTK+ 1.2.6; i586-pc-linux-gnu) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org auth 5970e755 unsubscribe freebsd-newbies raquel@thericehouse.net -- Raquel ============================================================ Once you live with the issue of women and the landscape for a while, you find that you cannot separate them from the notions of peace, spirituality, and community. As a desktop client I find kdm to very convenient as it allows normal users to log off. Read the kdm instructions very carefully first before enabling this on a remotely accessible box. The installation program can be found at /stand/sysinstall when you finish. Of course, you can also configure your network card by editing the /etc/rc.conf file. Since you're a beginner, it's pointless to send you searching for documentation yourself. Start at http://www.FreeBSD.org/docs.html and remember that above all, this is supposed to be fun... It depends on your cd burning program if it accepts a file without the extension *.iso. > > Q2: What is the file CHECKSUM.MD5 for? Should I > > download this also? This file is optional. It contains a short ascii-string of the md5-checksum of the iso-image (just for verification purposes). If you run the command md5 or sometimes md5sum on a unix-box then you should get the same checksum string printed out after a while. For sure I understand I was building a firewall. So I know I have to use 2 NIC's The first gets the IP-number and all the other stuff from the DHCP-server from my provider. But the second one must have an Ip-number in my local network. I managed to do that. (how a grown-up can be happy with this small adjustments ;-) ) And now. I can ping my lacal network adapter. No I don't expect U to tell me how to configure the whole server (I like to manage that by myself) just point me in the right direction. I've started to look trough the FBSD handbook. But if I have to implement all the intresting things I read there I won't be able to get this thing running the next couple of years. And so another question. Does anyone have expirience with Symantec ghost? I'd like to make often a ghost image of my boot device. You do not have to subscribe to a mailing list to read it. All of the mailing lists are available on the web. The "current" weeks postings for all the lists are at: http://docs.freebsd.org/mail/current/ And if you want to read older postings, just go to the parent directory and select the year, then group, then month. http://docs.freebsd.org/mail/ There are some news servers that do mirror some of the mailing lists. This depends on your news service. Do a search of your available groups for "freebsd" and see what's available. Have you looked at "http://www.redhat.com/software/database/"? Here's what you'll find: Red Hat Database $2295.00 The Open Source Database for Red Hat Linux 7.1 Powered by PostgreSQL 7.1. Look carefully. It's open source. They admit it. And they charge $2295. One of their selling points is that you can use it on multiple systems. They actually advertise that "that" means lower cost of ownership. I'm certainly not going to even attempt to justify what they do; obviously they've figured out a way to sell to corporate America while still supporting what they see in open source. Those of us who are smart enough to download the pieces and configure them together can certainly get the package free. Some replies to this thread have pointed out that you can find everything in Red Hat Linux Professional for a free download. That's not quite true; Red Hat Linux Professional 7.2 includes some packages that are NOT free or open source. For example, Red Hat Linux Professional 7.2 includes a complete Adobe Acrobat (not just the reader). That's the main reason we bought it. We're going to have a linux desktop devoted to creating .pdf files. As I've always said, I'm a tool-user. That's a good tool at a good price, for me, anyway. But just as true, you can download the two ISOs. In general server and desktop installations those are the only CD-ROMs you'll ever need. And it is open source, and it IS going to stay that way. Unless AOL buys them . What? You haven't read the rumors? Anything more that neds to be said can and should be said on freebsd-chat. Jeff -- Jeff Lasman nobaloney.net P. O. For the first part I've built, 100's of computers using every version of Windows, FreeBSD since 2.2.6, DOS, Novel, Lantastic, Banyan, Linux, and even Solaris on Intel. SMC, Realtek, and 3Com have consistently been the bad/troublesome cards. In fact I recently was willing to give SMC another chance, mostly because I needed one now. After three days of playing with it, I replaced it with an older Intel card, and had the system up and running with no problems within 5 minutes. 3Com... is just junk. :) The 509c and the 905B chipsets are the worst NIC chipsets ever. They don't confirm to standards very well in the first place. They tend to be like USR modems, they work great if you're attaching to the same model on the other end. As for the 2nd part, -newbies was created with the cavet that ALL technical questions be asked in the -questions group. The rational behind that was that people using FreeBSD tended to use it in production. -newbies are by definition new and may accidently give the wrong answer to a question causing lots of headaches for that person. If you all ready Sue's monthly posting or http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html you'll see way down at the bottom it explains what -newbies is for. Rick brings up an interesting point in that this list claims to be for newbies to discuss non-technical BSD topics. And yet, all I have seen has been "I can't get my network card working" or "PPP !!????" type stuff. How's about a discussion of BSD's value on the desktop vs. Linux, or great apps to get once you've gotten that rig up and running (using all the info you got from -questions ;))? I have gotten FreeBSD running on a spare box at work, so now what? What are the differences in the "flavors" of BSD, and which is right for me? (I seem to remember a small article on that last subject, but it wasn't very detailed) What can a lowly newbie do to help? Are there any BSD user groups similar to the LUGs that pop up everywhere? How would I get one started? Granted, everyone has been helpful and I must say that the BSD community seems a bit more forgiving, on the whole, than some of the hard-core Linux folks. However, it seems that this forum was intended to foster discussion about and around the community itself rather than solving particular configuration/installation/whatever type problems. I may be off base here, and ultimately this list is about what the user's make it, but I subscribed to this list because I expected the kind of discourse described above. I thought i have experience in routing but it doesn´t seem so. I have a box with an ISDN card and an ethernet interface. But if i try to ping or nslookup the outside there is no route to host. The routingtable looks a little bit strange: default 0:0:0:0:0:0 isp0 192.168.100 ep0 192.168.1.2 217.12.32.34 isp0 (after connect, because dynamic) 192.168.100.2 link1 So where is the problem and how can i resolve it? It is also available at http://www.welearn.com.au/freebsd/newbies/) FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "subscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message. FreeBSD have been difficult, if not (in some cases) impossible.
This isn't to say it can't be done, especially by somebody who
has sufficient experience.  However, for the newbie who
