There's no available informations on laptop compatibility lists. So do you have any solutions to make a quick check if everything will work? I know Solaris has a Install_check tool which will give a list whether a hardware has solaris drivers ,third-part driver or not supported. Does Fbsd has something likely? Thk in advance! This is an invaluable tool when I am just curious. It's also the invaluable tool for disaster recovery. Admittedly I've never used it before reading your patch, but it seems it worked for me, building a package for the fdp-primer. I could install it with pkg_add, but then pkg_delete errored out trying to uninstall it. Not sure whether we should completely remove it from the docs though. I've been struggling with the translation of ppp-and-slip lately (plus I had rather limited spare time), hence the late reply. I think it would be ok to commit all the above, maybe get a few opinions on removing the reference to the package target. I see no other problems. Yes, this target is probably working, but deprecated. I am thinking of this because hrs@ told me so [1], and maybe that is why blackend@ is experimenting with a new packaging solution [2]. It is done inside of smbfs/lib/smb/ctx.c, in the smb_ctx_init() function, which then calls smb_ctx_setuser(). smb_ctx_init() is called from smbfs/mount_smbfs/mount_smbfs.c:131 (in my RELENG_7 sources anyway.) I found this when I was adding my own -U flag to mount_smbfs :) Cheers Tom From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jan 21 15:24:23 2009 Return-Path: Delivered-To: doc@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 418AA10656C4 for ; Wed, 21 Jan 2009 15:24:23 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from paulius.sulcas@post.skynet.lt) Received: from smtp-q2.skynet.lt (smtp-q2.skynet.lt [212.122.94.173]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AE6408FC13 for ; Wed, 21 Jan 2009 15:24:22 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from paulius.sulcas@post.skynet.lt) Received: from mx4.skynet.lt (unknown [212.122.94.176]) by smtp-q2.skynet.lt (Postfix) with ESMTP id 021BB3835D for ; Wed, 21 Jan 2009 16:53:12 +0200 (EET) Received: from [127.0.0.1] (helo=localhost) by mx4.skynet.lt with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1LPeS7-0002Pr-TD for doc@FreeBSD.org; Wed, 21 Jan 2009 16:53:11 +0200 X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -0.875 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-0.875 required=6.31 tests=[AWL=0.174, BAYES_00=-2.599, HTML_MESSAGE=0.001, MSGID_MULTIPLE_AT=1.449, RDNS_NONE=0.1] Received: from mx4.skynet.lt ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (mx4.skynet.lt [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id AFNhbG4OZvkW for ; Wed, 21 Jan 2009 16:53:09 +0200 (EET) Received: from [84.240.36.89] (helo=PauliusPC) by mx4.skynet.lt with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1LPeS5-0002O4-K0 for doc@FreeBSD.org; Wed, 21 Jan 2009 16:53:09 +0200 From: "Paulius" To: Date: Wed, 21 Jan 2009 16:52:43 +0200 Message-ID: <000001c97bd7$ea9aac00$bfd00400$@sulcas@post.skynet.lt> MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Microsoft Office Outlook 12.0 Thread-Index: Acl71+nKo5IhvRJ2T3yliTzKpNhZtg== Content-Language: lt Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.5 Cc: Subject: A question regarding broken link to portmaster man page in FreeBSD Handbook X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 21 Jan 2009 15:24:23 -0000 Hello, I have noticed that in chapter 4.5.4.4 "Upgrading Ports using Portmaster" the link to portmaster man page is leading to a "Sorry, no data found for `portmaster(8)'. Please try a keyword search" page for FreeBSD 7.1 RELEASE. Is this just a thing of broken link or is portmaster no longer present/supported on 7.1 release of FreeBSD. Sorry that I am asking these kind of questions, but I am new to FreeBSD. I think in case of portmaster has been removed or not supported on 7.1 release there should be a note about that in handbook so other newbies like me would get confused. Portmaster is not part of the base at all, it's a port itself. However, it is supported for all outstanding versions of FreeBSD. The problem with the link seems to be that the man page is not installed anywhere that the man.cgi can find it. If a committer who is familiar with that process can reply to me by private mail on how to fix that, I would be grateful. :) All that said, you can install ports-mgmt/portmaster and read the man page pretty easily, then if you find that it doesn't meet your needs just pkg_delete it. Alternatively you could do: cd /usr/ports/ports-mgmt/portmaster/files nroff -mdoc portmaster.8 | more hope this helps, Doug -- This .signature sanitized for your protection From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jan 21 23:29:17 2009 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5B24C1065670 for ; Wed, 21 Jan 2009 23:29:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from pali.gabor@googlemail.com) Received: from mail-ew0-f20.google.com (mail-ew0-f20.google.com [209.85.219.20]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D60DA8FC08 for ; Wed, 21 Jan 2009 23:29:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from pali.gabor@googlemail.com) Received: by ewy13 with SMTP id 13so2495815ewy.19 for ; Wed, 21 Jan 2009 15:29:15 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=googlemail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:received:received:sender:message-id:date:from :organization:user-agent:mime-version:to:cc:subject:references :in-reply-to:x-enigmail-version:content-type :content-transfer-encoding; bh=DYXLJk6URAvUUwLkeRhJpoaV4BL1I/NVV9tlgiNjVx8=; b=n31XO9SuVd4GA7O0xcNS5SP16RkzgJCiGx+RRlmRz8SbRqyFPoNLHSGTf8wRzdY02O 8tQ29NlIvjzSw10XqsROcCBw0np4UXSlX+QjauvcvLwmmtHbtHVxScO6AYdrbrnyMByq GhK5ryWn6AQp50ihwkJaI5gtzte/TX+5T+mWo= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=googlemail.com; s=gamma; h=sender:message-id:date:from:organization:user-agent:mime-version:to :cc:subject:references:in-reply-to:x-enigmail-version:content-type :content-transfer-encoding; b=wthTM0m5bJqzOzHc2ajl148P5P1vB7KkEZFFqz5Kor4fS++hEVCDT4I/m0VUfpZTHk wVT3XL/VKudJBZSlnqZEGLQWgjfq3tZw5iyZinrdWg5a+z9Zv7GAnZN5xXl8rcAs7zc7 vrX0IOEqqOhYk5waCppP4RmB+HpzF4/c6rP/A= Received: by 10.210.54.19 with SMTP id c19mr1979515eba.191.1232580555871; Wed, 21 Jan 2009 15:29:15 -0800 (PST) Received: from beehive.inf.elte.hu (beehive.inf.elte.hu [157.181.166.90]) by mx.google.com with ESMTPS id f7sm23618852nfh.78.2009.01.21.15.29.14 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=RC4-MD5); Wed, 21 Jan 2009 15:29:15 -0800 (PST) Sender: =?UTF-8?B?UMOBTEkgR8OhYm9yIErDoW5vcw==?= Message-ID: <4977AFD5.8010302@FreeBSD.org> Date: Thu, 22 Jan 2009 00:29:25 +0100 From: Gabor PALI Organization: The FreeBSD Project User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.18 (X11/20081220) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org References: <184b087c0901211428h124ce3a1o994f9ef61fb0ca68@mail.gmail.com> In-Reply-To: <184b087c0901211428h124ce3a1o994f9ef61fb0ca68@mail.gmail.com> X-Enigmail-Version: 0.95.7 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: Subject: Re: where to define an alternative install location X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 21 Jan 2009 23:29:18 -0000 Hello Chen, You wrote: > If I want to install the built doc into different location from default > /usr/doc, where to define the variable? Good question! I think you should use the DOCDIR variable in the following syntax: # make DOCDIR=target install clean where *target* is the absolute path of the target directory. Hope that helps, :g PS: I think it is worth to be added to the Handbook... ;) From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jan 22 00:46:45 2009 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C1BB5106566B for ; Thu, 22 Jan 2009 00:46:45 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from xuchen66@gmail.com) Received: from mail-gx0-f21.google.com (mail-gx0-f21.google.com [209.85.217.21]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0DF248FC14 for ; Thu, 22 Jan 2009 00:46:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from xuchen66@gmail.com) Received: by gxk14 with SMTP id 14so4516405gxk.19 for ; Wed, 21 Jan 2009 16:46:44 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:mime-version:received:in-reply-to:references :date:message-id:subject:from:to:cc:content-type :content-transfer-encoding; bh=VjWUSeI7LxGc9ByQskB26qeCGiyW3bQexueDvq4kkI8=; b=rqgQJThwL5jzLdkOPlNc2SHSOHrH/oawj+MiYr3N0uiTj016g6aKkvB9Xcxi0Q1sC7 IONsuEo744RoI9fhSF13mKlYalH6hdagGejtqlfS5vz521RPhYGnkgFAsg0KNTlCKYTb cYrqM04vhYyo1pPKUobMpsqe1Jb8fz3cJrLLU= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:date:message-id:subject:from:to :cc:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; b=cNCsEZwOv5ydX/J5NyivMn3Y2elIaJ/WOndLS8eJSFPlyKmf34Dxb+hoIM8gAu/K5W vfYMFSiHtFkjAtxCWqnFVMJRlmI7e4nOOKYVvmzzWfjyTsuUi4VStHA9+mXbKnreRbqs qk8e5ZBKWIKCiw0P/KCpz9eSBIfqe6VwW7XwU= MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.90.120.14 with SMTP id s14mr3736444agc.20.1232585204101; Wed, 21 Jan 2009 16:46:44 -0800 (PST) In-Reply-To: <4977AFD5.8010302@FreeBSD.org> References: <184b087c0901211428h124ce3a1o994f9ef61fb0ca68@mail.gmail.com> <4977AFD5.8010302@FreeBSD.org> Date: Wed, 21 Jan 2009 19:46:44 -0500 Message-ID: <184b087c0901211646hb8cdc06m87d3bc77c5610f9d@mail.gmail.com> From: Chen Xu To: Gabor PALI Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: where to define an alternative install location X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 22 Jan 2009 00:46:46 -0000 Hi Gabor, and all, thanks for the reply. That works nicely. Certainly, one can even add an entry DOCDIR=target in /etc/make.conf for convenience. When I tried to look inside the doc source dir/share/mk/doc.install.mk whose name suggests that I can define variable there, variable defined in that seemed not working at all there. Eventually, I found out that I had to modify the global file at /usr/share/mk/bsd.own.mk . I felt that this was very confusing. So yes, if this is mentioned in handbook, that would be a lot simpler for people who don't know about it yet. OK, now comes my 2nd annoying but reasonable question. (how) Can I build my doc in one machine and install on a remote box running httpd server? You can find more information about building and installing web site and documentation in the FDP Primer [1], and you can read about NFS in the Handbook [2]. The original idea could also be found there [3]. You can find a list here: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/mirrors-ftp.htm= l. Look for one which has the comment "(http)" after its name. For example http://ftp2.de.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/. There is a subdirectory "doc" which contains all the documentation for all available languages. It didn't work very well and I gave up on it. (I tried to install /usr/ports/emulators/linux_base-f8) Then I found the following link on freebsd-questions mailing list http://crnl.org/blog/2008/11/01/flash-9-for-freebsd-71 and it describes how to install the linux_base-f8 in a way that works. I was just wondering if it should be updated in the handbook now that things has changed with FreeBSD 7.1 or if linux-base-fc4 still is the official version.
