it seems you CD drive is ALSO configured as a master on the IDE bus

I also had this problem : this can be due to bad cables (or bad
connections between the cable and the motherboard or between the cable
and the disk drive)

this is not good : the sector containing the partition table can not be
read (time to buy another disk !)
