>Description:
One of the SATA disks (ad4) in my amd64 system is dying and has some bad sectors. Previously the result of trying to read those sectors was a timeout error message and a panic due to PR 107639. Now the result is a total hang. When on the console in single user mode, numlock doesn't work, and I can't enter the debugger with ctrl-alt-esc (which normally works). The software watchdog also can't rouse the system.

The odd thing is that the hang is accompanied by the console scrolling up one line (as if someone printf'ed a newline) and the block cursor disappears. No other messages.

I don't know why the behavior changed. It is possibly the result of adding a second disk (ad6, also SATA) as a replacement for the failing one.

I tried setting a ddb breakpoint on printf to see if that was the reason for the newline. The result of that was that instead of a newline, a '[' was printed, in bright white, which is the first character of the debugger's breakpoint message ("[thread pid %d tid %ld ]" from db_print_thread).

This is not an inherent hardware problem because Linux (Knoppix 5.1.1) is able to read the disk without crashing. (It reports I/O errors, of course.)

Obviously I'm going to get rid of the broken disk eventually, but I'd like to help fix this bug before I do. Any suggestions welcome.

Here is a verbose dmesg output:
