Ye sure the ttyv's are set up correctly? See the FAQ regarding ttyv's.

I think ye might miss this entry:

ttyvc   "/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm -nodaemon"  xterm   off secure

One of the ttyv's in /etc/ttys has to be like this.

try typing startx after that...

$HOME/.xinitrc 

put something like 

twm in it to start twm
