Just use 'mv' to rename them.  You can put them in any directory. 

cd  # to go home
mv /dos/SOMEPACK.AGE somepackage.tgz
pkg_add somepackage.tgz

The .tgz extension is the important part.  Without it pkg_add will just
stare blankly at you.
