The failure occurs very early on, following detecting the IDE media discs the screen clears and the next message is "Read error" 
appears....
It has been suggested to me the problem might be from a proprietary BIOS however that was not very convincing as this is a 
Dell...BIOS A13.
If I can help any more do let me know.
