The '1' refers to the second drive detected by the BIOS (the BIOS detects IDE disks before SCSI, and hackers always count from 0 :-) For the benefit of anyone who's not familiar with the rest of it, 'sd' means SCSI drive, '0' signifies the first such drive, 'a' means, well that's a bit of a historical artefact, and '/kernel' (which should have a slash in front of it) is the name of the kernel to be booted.
